Design method 3 ( Baba Nyonya )

Years ago , i had watched a singaporean movie which is about baba nyonya. I found that it's very interesting especially the architecture, manik shoes , and cuisine of baba nyonya. and i would like to know more about it . But too bad , i have no chance to pay a visit to melaka, penang and singapore's baba nyonya house before this . Finally ,i've got the chance to visit baba nyonya museum which is located in Melaka with my lecturer sweii, tutor yiwei and classmates. It was a nice and memorable trip with them .By the way , we're going there to research about baba nyonya herritage. I've learnt alot of thing from this field trip.

First of all , what is baba and nyonya ?

Peranakan and Baba-Nyonya(Chinese: 峇峇娘惹; pinyin: Bābā Niángrě; Hokkien: Bā-bā Niû-liá) are terms used for the descendants of late 15th and 16th-centuryChinese immigrants to theNusantara region during the Colonial era. This community in Melaka, they address themselves as "Nyonya Baba" instead of "Baba-Nyonya".Baba are for gentleman and Nyonya for ladies.

I like the structure of baba nyonya house.The architectural style of the Peranakan’s townhouses also borrowed freely from other cultures, fusing Victorian, Chinese and Malay elements. It looks very small from outside . Actually it's very long and wide.

From the victorian era lamp to floor tiles, we know that they were influenced by western too. The interior design of the house is very chinese style. The room has been separated by chinese traditional crafting wall .

There are two living room to serve their guests, one for friends and the other is for someone closer to them like relatives.

Female that unmarried are not allow to go to the living room and chat together with guests, there is a big wooden wall blocking the living room and the inner living room. So those girl will peep from the hole on the wooden wall.

The staircases that done without using nail is full with craft will close and lock at night, so that those man back at late night can't go to upstair. The master bedroom is at front of the second floor. They had a small hole that been cover. therefore They can peep their visitor from there. If they not going to entertain the guest and do not like them, they can just pour water from there.

There is a well and that area is not cover with roof. The water paip that connect from the roof to the well area had also been design, the paip been cover by a decoration of fish, when raining, the water from roof will come out from the mouth of the fish. This design is done according to the chinese sentence, 如鱼得水 and also 肥水不留外人田.

WD2 - Strategic Brief

Project Definition

This is a 8 weeks project and it is about to redesign a commercial website, and my chosen client was Malaysia Residency. In this project, i have to find out the part that can enhance to make the site to be more interesting and attract more foreigners to come in and make their identity more stronger.

Current Site's Analysis Goals

One of the main unique selling point for this site was the uniqueness of culture and religious in that country.
The site is abit too empty, so can be add on some nice and cultural graphic such as batik as the background to make it not so empty.
It's still can be simple and clean website, so that user will be feel more comfortable when visit it.
can add on some flash picture to make the site not so boring.
The information part can be improve because it's abit boring and confusing user. May be can be add on a little abit of content to explain it to let them understand and know more about it .
Provide more clear information or instruction for the places that they can visit.

Client's Analysis

Malaysia Residency is under the Malaysia My Second Home programme ("MM2H")
It's is an international residency scheme enacted by the Government of Malaysia to allow foreigners to live in the country on a long stay Visa of up to 10 years.
The program is open to all citizens of countries recognized by Malaysia regardless of race, religion, gender or age. Applicants are allowed to bring along their spouse and unmarried childer below 21 years old. It's over 8000 people have been approved for the MM2H visa.
Tolerance and social harmony are hallmarks of Malaysian society, offering people the freedom to maintain and celebrate their cultural and religious heritage, while participating in Malaysia's way of life.
The unique selling points of this site is the uniqueness of the culture in Malaysia. Beside that, there is low cost of living, developed infrastructure, friendly Malaysians, attractive tourist destinations and general quality of life.
The availability of good properties much more lower prices as compared to other regions, medical centers and private clinics are found in all states with 24-hour emergency service. There are also quite a number of international schools, private colleges and universities situated in all major cities for higher learning at a reasonable cost.

Short Term Site Goals

To increase hit rates, and to introduce Malaysia culture to foreigners and

attract them, to let them know how is Malaysia looked alike and what is the reason the want choosing

Malaysia to make their second home in our country.

Long Term Site Goals

To increase the business value for more working opportunities and more business set up in our country.

Beside that, it can increse our country's economy.

Target Audience

Foreigners businessman and those migrants who is looking for peaceful life.

Competitor's Analysis

Most of the competitors website has its own unique point to their country, and the identity of the website is strong too althought the layout is simple and clean. Therefor , Malaysia residency website can be more interesting to attract more audience get interested to come to out country.
